The Night I Stopped Trusting Temperature Ratings
September in the Enchantments. Clear sky, no wind, 28 degrees at the lake. I was in a bag rated to 32F, and I shivered from midnight until my alarm went off at 5 AM. That was the night I learned that a sleeping bag's temperature rating is a suggestion, not a promise, and that the gap between "survival rating" and "comfort rating" is the gap between misery and sleep.
Since then I've slept in probably 15 different bags and quilts across trips from the desert Southwest to the North Cascades in November. I've learned what fill power actually means in practice versus on paper, how bag shape affects warmth more than most people realize, and why spending an extra $100 on your sleep system is almost always worth it. In the Spark SP III, wearing a merino base layer, I slept warm every night — including the 22-degree night, which surprised me given the bag's 25F rating. The ULTRA-DRY down treatment meant I didn't worry about condensation from my breath affecting the fill, and the horizontal baffles kept the down distributed evenly without cold spots.
The mummy shape is snug but not claustrophobic. I'm 5'11" and the regular fits me with enough room to shift positions without feeling straitjacketed. The half-length zipper saves weight but means you can't vent the bag on warmer nights without sticking a leg out the top — a minor annoyance on those 35-degree nights where the bag was slightly too warm.

It's not the lightest, not the warmest, and not the cheapest — but it's excellent at everything, which is harder to achieve than being best at one thing.

Western Mountaineering UltraLite — The Gold Standard
The Western Mountaineering UltraLite is the bag I reach for when conditions are genuinely cold. Rated to 20F (-7C), it weighs 1 lb 14 oz (850g) and uses 850+ fill goose down in a continuous baffle design that lets you shift the down to where you need it most. The 6'0" version has a generous 60-inch circumference — roomy enough that side sleepers can actually sleep on their side without compressing the insulation beneath them.
Western Mountaineering has been making bags in San Jose, California since 1970. Every bag is hand-filled and hand-inspected. That sounds like marketing copy, but you feel the difference. The down distribution is flawless — no thin spots, no clumping, no shifting that leaves your shoulders exposed at 3 AM. The Extremelite shell fabric is one of the lightest and most breathable bag fabrics available, which means less interior condensation and better temperature regulation. I've slept in this bag at 15F without a liner and been comfortable. Not "survival comfortable" — actually warm and rested.
The continuous baffle design is worth understanding. Most bags use sewn-through baffles (stitched lines that create chambers) or box baffles (fabric walls that separate chambers). The other consideration is that WM bags use untreated down — no hydrophobic coating. In a well-ventilated tent this isn't an issue, but in a bivy sack or single-wall shelter where condensation drips directly onto the bag, you'll want something with DWR-treated fill.
Best for: Cold sleepers, winter backpackers, and anyone who wants a bag they'll use for 10+ years. The UltraLite is the last 20-degree bag you'll ever buy if you take care of it.
Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20 — Best Quilt
Quilts aren't for everyone, but once you switch, it's hard to go back. The Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20 weighs 1 lb 5 oz (595g) for a 20F-rated sleep system — that's 255 grams lighter than the Western Mountaineering UltraLite at the same temperature rating. It achieves this by eliminating the back panel (the insulation you compress beneath you anyway) and the hood and zipper that a traditional mummy bag includes.
I was skeptical. I'd been a mummy bag person for years, and the idea of sleeping under what's essentially a fancy blanket in freezing temps felt reckless. Then I took the Enigma on a 5-day trip along the southern section of the PCT near Big Bear, and by the second night I was a convert. The foot box snaps closed to trap warm air, the pad attachment straps prevent drafts from sneaking in underneath, and without a hood restricting my head movement, I actually slept better than I do in a mummy bag.
Enlightened Equipment is a cottage manufacturer based in Minnesota, and they let you customize nearly everything — fill power (800 or 950), temperature rating, length, width, zipper side, shell color. The Enigma's weakness is wind. In a mummy bag, drafts are sealed out by the zipper, hood, and drawcords. A quilt relies on the pad attachment system to prevent cold air intrusion, and if you move around a lot in your sleep, gaps can form along the edges. On windy nights in an exposed camp, I've woken up with a cold draft along my side where the quilt pulled away from the pad. Using a wider quilt (EE offers a +3" width option) mostly solves this. The other fix is just learning to sleep a bit more still — which, admittedly, is easier said than done.
Best for: Weight-conscious backpackers and thru-hikers who want maximum warmth per ounce. Side sleepers who feel restricted by mummy bags. Anyone already comfortable with minimalist gear philosophy.
Fill Power: What the Numbers Actually Mean
Every sleeping bag markets its fill power, but most hikers don't know what the number represents. Fill power measures the volume — in cubic inches — that one ounce of down occupies. 850 fill power means one ounce of that down fills 850 cubic inches. Higher fill power means more warmth per ounce, which means a lighter, more compressible bag at the same temperature rating.
The practical difference between 750 and 850 fill power is roughly 15-20% in weight for the same warmth. An 850-fill bag rated to 20F might weigh 28 oz; a 750-fill bag at the same rating would weigh around 33-34 oz. That's a meaningful difference on a multi-day trip, but not a dramatic one. Between 850 and 950 fill, the difference shrinks to about 8-10%, and the price premium is steep — often $100-150 more.
My advice: 850 fill is the sweet spot. Below that, you're carrying noticeable extra weight. Above that, you're paying a steep premium for diminishing returns. Unless you're on an FKT attempt or a 2,600-mile thru-hike where every ounce compounds over months, 850-fill down gives you the best balance of warmth, weight, packability, and cost.
Temperature Ratings: The Uncomfortable Truth
The EN/ISO 23537 testing standard gives sleeping bags two ratings: comfort and lower limit. The comfort rating is the temperature at which a "standard" woman can sleep comfortably. The lower limit is the temperature at which a "standard" man can sleep for 8 hours in a curled position without waking. Most manufacturers advertise the lower limit, not the comfort rating, because the lower limit is a more impressive number.
Here's why this matters: if a bag is rated to "20F," that probably means a 175-pound man in a base layer on an insulated pad can survive a 20F night without dangerous heat loss. It does not mean he'll be comfortable. For comfort, add 10-15 degrees. A 20F-rated bag is genuinely comfortable for most people down to about 30-35F.
I sleep cold. I know this about myself now. So I buy bags rated 10-15 degrees below the coldest temperature I expect to encounter. If I'm planning a trip where overnight lows might hit 25F, I bring a 10 or 15-degree bag. Some people run warm and can push their bags 5 degrees below the rating. Know which category you fall into before you buy — one cold night will tell you everything you need to know.
What I'd Buy With One Budget
If I had $350 to spend on one sleeping bag for year-round backpacking, I'd buy the Sea to Summit Spark SP III and pair it with a fleece liner ($30, adds ~10-15 degrees) for winter use. Total system: under $400, covers 15-50F, weighs about 2 lbs with the liner. That handles 90% of the backpacking most people do.
If I had $500 and knew I'd be in cold conditions regularly, the Western Mountaineering UltraLite. It's the buy-once-cry-once option. If I prioritized weight above all else, the Enlightened Equipment Enigma — lighter, cheaper, and warmer per ounce than any mummy bag on the market, with the caveat that quilts take some getting used to.
